What is the correct timing of intercourse?
Can sex be "selected" by timing intercourse patterns?

No way! This is a wives tale. 26% 26% ( 9 )

Post What is the correct timing of intercourse?
Can the sex be selected based on the timing of intercourse? Well... no, but I believe it is quite possible that the probability for one sex or the other can at least be manipulated.  Let me explain:

MALE AND FEMALE GENETICS
It is common knowledge that the sex chromosomes are as follows:

XX => female, XY => male

Therefore, it is the male sperm that determines the sex of offspring since either an X or a Y is donated. Now lets make a couple of assumptions.  FIRST, the more genetic material a cell has the more cellular energy that can be produced over time. According to this assumption, the X sperm cell would have more endurance. SECOND, the more genetic material a cell has the heavier it is. Once again, the X sperm cell would fit this description and as a result it would be expected to travel SLOWER.

HOW DOES THIS WORK?
According to the above, the X sperm cell would travel slower, but would have more endurance giving it the capacity to sustain its mission for a longer period of time.  So, if you want to have a girl, intercourse should occur at the first sign of the onset of fertility (another good reason to monitor mucus!) ... then you should abstain until well after the fertile time disappears.  For a male, you should have intercourse as close to the time of ovulation as possible.

In the old days we used to say "please don't try this at home."  Well, you can try it at home! In fact, go right ahead ... but of course you should be married! This is very important!

One more thing ... This is going to require a significant amount of self control in order to abstain at the proper time otherwise it won't work.  Also, by reason, it should be a lot easier to increase the probability of a female child, but not necessarily a male child.  That is because to correctly judge the time during which to have "early" intercourse is going to be a lot easier than determining the precise time of ovulation.  But what the heck ... give it a try!

I've always thought this was interesting but could never decide what gender I wanted to try for.  I understand that some people have a strong desire for one gender over the other.  I thank God I'm not one of them.  I think you did a very good job explaining the process and I've heard people swear it works.

I've been blessed with all boys, but if I'd been trying for a girl would I have felt cheated?  If I'd been trying for another boy (which fits into our house easier) would a girl have upset me?  I think I'll stay in the dark about just how well this works.   Smile

Post Sex selection
Hi "yabby"?
Your boys are adorable.  I'm about to have our first child, a girl.  I hope to have a boy at some point, because I only had sisters growing up, and the idea of raising a boy(s) is fascinating to me!  I am thrilled our baby is a girl, however--and, primarily, that she is healthy and my pregnancy has been GREAT!  When we were trying to get pregnant and achieved pregnancy with our girl, we were together primarily the couple of days preceding ovulation and the day of ovulation, so the theory doesn't really apply in our case.  We just wanted to get pregnant so badly, we aimed for the entire fertile time.

Congratulations on joining FertilityWeb!

David,

I had read that a scientific study came out after that original one that contradicted what you are saying about the X sperm being slower. Do you know anything about that? I have also heard that as the man ages, there is more possibility of a girl baby being conceived. Is that true?

Thanks,

Do you have the reference?  I am unaware of any "science" on the matter.  What is "known" here is more theoretical with case study research at best - at least that I am aware of.  What is being studied here is "intercourse patterns" and that data would be correlational.  If you have something let us know.

I found the following webpage that lists several studies that contradict the original Shettles study on gender selection. However, I know the Billings still list the Shettles study in their book as valid. They do not mention these other studies.

I don't have references for the age of the husband and its effect on gender. It was in an article I read a year or 2 ago. I don't know if there is a scientific basis to that particular claim.
