I have made the following observation. Say I have two populations of couples keeping track of fertile days and intercourse such that we could see how well FFI is being applied.
Population A: These couples report that they are practicing FFI.
Population B: These couples are not practicing FFI, nor are they trying to avoid pregnancy. These couples are sometimes referred to as "povidentialists" which simply means that whatever God's providence is for getting pregnant is fine. That label may seem to fit, but certainly not all of these couples are religiously motivated.
As a general rule, it is almost impossible to tell one group from the other by examining the charting and intercourse patterns. Thus, FFI, looks like random intercourse in many cases.
It would be great to find out why this occurs and what the difficulties are. Unfortunately, there is more psychology than there is "hard" science behind what is going on.
However, consider this:
If 1. At best a woman of normal fertility can only conceive 6 days per cycle, and 2. No woman has a 100% probability of achieving on any given day, and 3. Women with infertility have even fewer good opportunities to get pregnant on highly fertile days, then the odds will tell you that this is a problem. Sometimes women with reduced fertility ovulate even less often.
Here are some numbers: Let's say there were 4 days per cycle on average where a woman had a serious chance of getting pregnant. Let's say this woman had 10 cycles that year. Thus there were only 40 days out of 365 to achieve pregnancy. Once again, the probability of pregnancy on those days being somewhere between very poor to less than 100%. If intercourse is random, this can easily be missed.
One couple some time back had expensive surgery. They were in Vegas one weekend when the woman was having some of the best fertile mucus in a long long time. Intercourse did not occur. Why? Good question ... but to make a long story short, if you are in the same situation, there is no medical test or corrective procedure that will make you pregnant.
Well, hope this info helps. This is not an easy subject but an important one. What is the best advice? That seems to be another good question.
